Author here. Background, for anyone who hasn't followed this fight: IBM's iron–sulfur SQD results (Sci. Adv. 2025) are one of the flagship "quantum computers are useful for chemistry now" claims, and a published critique (arXiv:2501.07231) argues the quantum samples never beat classical selected-CI at matched cost. That argument is still live. Both sides have been arguing about energies. Neither measured which electronic state these calculations actually converge to. So I measured it. ⟨S²⟩ comes out between 4.7 and 7.0 depending on the system and the subspace size, where the target these papers name is a singlet at ⟨S²⟩ = 0. Every starting guess I tried lands in the same place, and the error at convergence is about the size of the spin-state ladder itself, which is the physics under dispute. IBM ships a mitigation for this. Run exactly as shipped, using their driver, their recovery loop and their own spin_square() diagnostic, it moves the ground energy by under a nanohartree while making the subspace 4.00x bigger: 194,481 determinants against 48,600. It makes a singlet representable. It never produces one. Their solver also takes a spin_sq argument that would target the singlet directly, and the default pipeline never sets it. I filed that narrow part on their tracker yesterday, before posting this: https://ift.tt/JGYLnd8 . A maintainer answered and closed it the same day, and his answer is the useful part. The flag, in his words, augments the sampled subspace by using alpha CI strings as beta strings and vice versa. That is a statement about which determinants span the space, not about what spin the returned state comes out in, which is exactly what the measurement says. He did not contest the numbers. The second question, whether the default path is meant to reach spin_sq at all, is still unanswered. The obvious objection is that this is all my own reimplementation, so here's the part that isn't. IBM's data-availability archive for the flagship paper contains the raw hardware measurement records: 2,457,600 shots on [2Fe-2S] from December 2023, 3,163,742 outcomes on [4Fe-4S] from April 2024, plus the integrals and the optimized circuit's parameters. Running their shots through their own pipeline, [2Fe-2S] reaches low ⟨S²⟩ but sits 248 mHa off their own reference, and [4Fe-4S] converges to a spin-pure triplet, Var(S²) = 3e-6, a genuine S=1 eigenstate: a clean state, and the wrong one, 1,438 mHa from their reference. Two things in that archive need no analysis from me at all. Their uniform-random null control matches or beats the hardware samples in every published [2Fe-2S] comparison. And their largest [4Fe-4S] runs, at subspace dimension 10⁸, trail their own classical HCI file by 149 mHa. On the AI angle, since that's half of why this is on HN: Claude did the initial audit end to end in about 72 hours under my direction, and it's been through many rounds of adversarial review since. The part I'd defend as actually interesting isn't the speed. It caught five defects in its own work through pre-registered validation gates, one of them by cross-checking against IBM's own published energy tables, and it retracted its own strongest pro-quantum finding when the new instrument showed that result was a spin-sector artifact. Tilde is a harness SDK platform - I've tried to take the best things of OpenClaw, Hermes & other harnesses and decompose them and make them available as cloud API building blocks. You can use Tilde to create AI agents for your use case, fast and self-host the agent's yourself. SpinWin is an open source menu bar app to visually rotate any individual window. You can rotate / spin as many as you want one by one. I was scrolling reels when one came on where the content creator suggested "turning the phone upside down" for a portion. I was sitting at my mac, and decided to see if I could find something that did this. To my surprise, nothing exists, so I decided to build it. Turns out macOS doesn't provide any public API to do anything like this, so I wound up using the Accessibility API to move the target window offscreen, where it keeps rendering. Then we capture it's contents with ScreenCaptureKit, and display that on a transparent, borderless overlay window which has a CALayer to rotate it. It's written in Swift, open source, MIT license, and signed/notarized. Have fun - would love to hear your comments.

I created an app that compares real-time prices and wait times across Uber, Lyft, Waymo, Tesla Robotaxi, Curb, and Empower. It shows you all ride options in one list, then once you’re ready to book, it deeplinks you to the provider’s app with the route pre-filled. I reverse-engineered ride-hailing mobile apps to understand how they fetch prices from their servers. You sign in to my app with your ride-hailing accounts, and then my app requests live prices from the same APIs that ride-hailing apps use. Importantly, my app is built using an on-device approach: the app on your phone stores authentication tokens locally and sends network requests directly to each ride-hailing company’s servers. This keeps your accounts private. That’s because most ride-hailing companies don’t offer public APIs for prices and wait times. Uber does offer one, but they prohibit using it for price comparison. When someone built a comparison app using the official API, Uber terminated their API access ( https://ift.tt/YU7XsHf ). There are apps today that don’t use official APIs, but they run your account tokens through their servers and send price requests server-side. To integrate a ride-hailing provider, my app sends network requests for sign-in, token refresh, ride prices, and ride history (to power a feature that shows you unified ride history across apps and how much you’ve saved on each ride). Some ride-hailing apps implement certificate pinning to prevent you from viewing their network requests, and some communicate with their server using Protobuf, a data format that doesn’t include the original field names. I created an app that compares real-time prices and wait times across Uber, Lyft, Waymo, Tesla Robotaxi, Curb, and Empower. It shows you all ride options in one list, then once you’re ready to book, it deeplinks you to the provider’s app with the route pre-filled. I reverse-engineered ride-hailing mobile apps to understand how they fetch prices from their servers. You sign in to my app with your ride-hailing accounts, and then my app requests live prices from the same APIs that ride-hailing apps use. Importantly, my app is built using an on-device approach: the app on your phone stores authentication tokens locally and sends network requests directly to each ride-hailing company’s servers. This keeps your accounts private. That’s because most ride-hailing companies don’t offer public APIs for prices and wait times. Uber does offer one, but they prohibit using it for price comparison. When someone built a comparison app using the official API, Uber terminated their API access ( https://ift.tt/YU7XsHf ). There are apps today that don’t use official APIs, but they run your account tokens through their servers and send price requests server-side. To integrate a ride-hailing provider, my app sends network requests for sign-in, token refresh, ride prices, and ride history (to power a feature that shows you unified ride history across apps and how much you’ve saved on each ride). Some ride-hailing apps implement certificate pinning to prevent you from viewing their network requests, and some communicate with their server using Protobuf, a data format that doesn’t include the original field names. Its now clear that we need to preserve tech press for non AI related things. Techmeme for example is now completely overrun with AI stories. HN is getting closer to that every day. If AI kickback deals, phony new model ratings, high RAM prices and your surprise at how you think you coded something with AI and it was AMAZING! even though it doesnt work is all there is count me out. We need a filter on existing tech news sites or an alternative press.

I am a big Dragon Age fan and sunk hundreds of hours into Inquisition. It had this minigame called astrariums where you had to solve these shapes based on constellation guides by tracing stars. I'm a hobby game dev and wondered if I could procedurally generate these puzzles so they were always solvable. Turns out you can, so I built a space puzzle game around it with a colorful aesthetic. I released it in web form here but I'm currently working on getting it on Steam and mobile.

Originally we (Andrey, Marcus, Juho) built MonoLisa in 2020 as we realised there's room for a better monospaced typeface for developers. The key insight was to make the glyphs slightly wider to make more room for design to make letters like m feel less cramped. Since then we've released a variable v2 (2022) and now we're happy to expand the typeface with a new family called MonoLisa Text. The reasoning was to cover *other* use cases beyond coding with this proportional font. We hope you give Monolisa a go as there's a free trial to try. We also welcome feedback!

Hi HN, I'm the creator of Mach ( https://ift.tt/ZlenHXL or https://machlang.org ). Two days ago, we finally achieved full self hosting. I wanted to make a post here to show off the language since this is a big milestone for us. ## TL;DR about the language for those curious: - There are no external dependencies anywhere in the pipeline. This includes LLVM, libc bindings, or anything of the sort (save for the historical bootstrap compiler, which requires any C compiler and has been phased out completely). - Mach is extremely opinionated and very anti-magic. WYSIWYG is a core principal for the language. There are no hidden behaviors, implicit type conversions, or "automatic features". Simplicity and stripping away ambiguity are core principals that this language upholds. - Performance currently lags behind C by about a factor of only 4x at the time of writing, almost entirely due to the lack of deep compiler optimizations like autovectorization, which have not been fully implemented yet. Eventually, Mach will be at least on par with C. ## Why did I build this? I love low level systems languages like C, Zig, Go, and (sometimes) Rust, but I wanted something that actively discourages "cleverness" in favor of long-term maintainability and overall clarity. Mach is highly opinionated and explicitly demands verbosity in ways that other languages are afraid to. Computers aren't magic, and code you write should not pretend they are. This project initially started out as a learning opportunity for myself, but grew into a fully featured language as time went on. There is still a lot I have to learn, however, and I'm excited to be able to do so as this project continues to grow into the future. ## Why do I (the reader) care? If you like C, you'll probably like Mach. Mach takes heavy inspiration from the "vibe" of writing C, but improves on much of the syntax, lacks quite a few footguns, "unhides" a lot of internal mechanisms, and has a FAR better dependency management system. If you want to play around with a language that is fully capable of replacing C, and especially if you would like to contribute to its development, then PLEASE stop by and mess around. ## Where should I go to check it out? The github repository has a link to our discord if you'd like to chat with myself or our few other regular users. My personal account has all of the tooling that exists as well as a few example repos if you feel inclined to try it out. ## Will this project by dead in X months? I've been working on this in the background for over 2 years now. This is a long term project that I plan to maintain into the indefinite future, with or without a userbase. If you like the language at all, I highly encourage you to get involved in its development because it WILL be sticking around in some capacity forever. There is still a lot I have to learn, however, and I'm excited to be able to do so as this project continues to grow into the future. ## Why do I (the reader) care? If you like C, you'll probably like Mach. Mach takes heavy inspiration from the "vibe" of writing C, but improves on much of the syntax, lacks quite a few footguns, "unhides" a lot of internal mechanisms, and has a FAR better dependency management system. If you want to play around with a language that is fully capable of replacing C, and especially if you would like to contribute to its development, then PLEASE stop by and mess around. ## Where should I go to check it out? The github repository has a link to our discord if you'd like to chat with myself or our few other regular users. My personal account has all of the tooling that exists as well as a few example repos if you feel inclined to try it out. ## Will this project by dead in X months? I've been working on this in the background for over 2 years now. This is a long term project that I plan to maintain into the indefinite future, with or without a userbase. If you like the language at all, I highly encourage you to get involved in its development because it WILL be sticking around in some capacity forever. I know this was a bit "rambly", but let me just say that it's been a great joy to work on this project and I would love any and ALL opinions and contributions, ESPECIALLY if you hate the language or find a problem that needs fixing. Hi I'm Dan from Elodin, making an open source real-time capable flight software simulation. For AI Grand Prix contestants, the wait for the Round 1 virtual qualifier simulation has been grueling. If you’re competing, check out our simulation harness to tide you over, built to match the published competition constraints and message format. It runs against real Betaflight, which we learned requires at least 1000 sensor samples per second to run real-time correctly. The competition warranted introducing a new feature to generate the camera sensor directly in the simulation loop. Typically people connect to Unreal or similar game engine to create a camera sensor, which works well but is very heavy. For the simple needs of this challenge, creating sample directly in the loop is very handy and easy to use. Happy to hear your feedback on this! While it's not fancy looking currently, it uses the Rust Bevy game engine, which should allow us to improve the visual fidelity quickly. We all should easily be able to shift our implementation to the published competition sim once it lands. Hope you enjoy and good luck!

Hi HN! Pierce here. Rotunda is a firefox fork primarily intended for agent use, which I’ve been hacking on nights/weekends. The cost is going to drop eventually, but I think on some level it's still usually the wrong primitive. The web gives us access to beautiful structured formats, plaintext, etc... why throw that away if we don't have to? I realized at some point that for 99% of automations I just want agents to be able to control my Chrome instance. But that’s easier said that done: CDP (the Chrome automation protocol) leaks a ton of state about being programmatically controlled, either by toggling window attributes or by running `page.evaluate()` commands right in the page context. Plus if you look at an automation running it's pretty obvious what happens: the mouse jumps around, fields are filled instantly, etc. Rotunda tries to fix this. Its standout features: - Realistic simulation of mouse movements and keyboard commands, powered by a trained RNN on my own timing patterns from the last week. (still feel weird about opting-in to a key logger but whatever) - Doesn’t lie about its host specs, only fibs about some client side details. I think like many of you, I've been jumping between many claude code/codex sessions at a time, managing multiple lines of work and worktrees in multiple repos. I wanted a way to easily manage multiple lines of work and reduce the amount of input I need to give, allowing the agents to remove me as a bottleneck from as much of the process as I can. So I built an orchestration tool for AI coding agents: Optio is an open-source orchestration system that turns tickets into merged pull requests using AI coding agents. You point it at your repos, and it handles the full lifecycle: - Intake — pull tasks from GitHub Issues, Linear, or create them manually - Execution — spin up isolated K8s pods per repo, run Claude Code or Codex in git worktrees - PR monitoring — watch CI checks, review status, and merge readiness every 30s - Self-healing — auto-resume the agent on CI failures, merge conflicts, or reviewer change requests - Completion — squash-merge the PR and close the linked issue The key idea is the feedback loop. Optio doesn't just run an agent and walk away — when CI breaks, it feeds the failure back to the agent. When a reviewer requests changes, the comments become the agent's next prompt. It keeps going until the PR merges or you tell it to stop. Built with Fastify, Next.js, BullMQ, and Drizzle on Postgres. Ships with a Helm chart for production deployment.
