SimBricks modularly combines existing simulators for machines, networks, and hardware, allowing you to build, test, and evaluate intricate complete systems in a virtual environment. I spent the last few days building out a nicer ChatGPT-like interface to use Mistral 7B and Llama 3 fully within a browser (no deps and installs). I’ve used the WebLLM project by MLC AI for a while to interact with LLMs in the browser when handling sensitive data but I found their UI quite lacking for serious use so I built a much better interface around WebLLM. I’ve been using it as a therapist and coach. And it’s wonderful knowing that my personal information never leaves my local computer. Should work on Desktop with Chrome or Edge. Other browsers are adding WebGPU support as well - see the Github for details on how you can get it to work on other browsers. Note: after you send the first message, the model will be downloaded to your browser cache. That can take a while depending on the model and your internet connection. But on subsequent page loads, the model should be loaded from the IndexedDB cache so it should be much faster. The project is open source (Apache 2.0) on Github. Hi HN reader, I'm a solo-founder navigating product market fit. I've spent 3 years building Double Subtitles which I am very proud of, but I don't know how to do marketing and my growth is somewhat stagnant. Through learning about SEO, I discovered this opportunity that I want to share: There are a lot of websites that let you download social media videos, which have extremely high traffic. But they are all disjoint, in the sense that some download TikTok videos, while others download Instagram videos, others YouTube, etc... I quickly prototyped software which downloads any video from any link. Currently the live version of FastDownload only supports TikTok and YouTube videos, since they are the most stable. But I will slowly start rolling out Instagram and other services weekly. ps. Personally, what I think is really cool is this Apple Shortcut, which lets you download videos directly from within whatever app you're in, using Share Action Extensions. pps. Another thing I'm very excited about is that while doing analysis with Ahrefs and SEMRush I have been able to identify many high value keywords which I'm deploying pSEO strategies for now. I personally find recommender systems on platforms that I am on to be very poor. I would expect with all the effort that has gone into these, and all the progress in machine learning, these systems would be fantastic and provide recommendations that I really enjoy. But they don’t. YouTube seems to have a massive recency bias and music, film, and TV recommendations rarely end up being things I enjoy.

Hi HN! I'm Kam, the founder and one of the authors of Linen. Today, we are launching Linen.team ( https://linen.team/ ), a lightweight threaded messaging app for your team. Modern workplace messaging apps (like Slack) are based on IRC, which is great for small groups, but as it scales, breaks down quickly: you either get overwhelmed by notifications or you have to turn them all off. Most chat apps have threads tacked on but aren't built from the ground up with this design in mind. We wanted to create a thread-first experience where you can organize and prioritize conversations so that you are not reliant on notifications to make sure you don’t miss anything. In apps like Slack, you have to check activities, channels, threads, and replies just to make sure you aren't missing anything important. We designed every message in Linen to belong to a thread, so it makes it easy to centralize everything in a single location. We let you select which channels you subscribe to from your inbox. This way, your inbox only has the important channels. This makes it easy to keep track of conversations without having to rely on notifications to make sure you don’t miss anything. We also wanted a better way to separate urgent vs. non-urgent communication. In Linen, we have introduced the concept of a !mention that is designed for urgent/time-sensitive messages. A !mention will send a push notification, whereas an @mention will show up in the person’s inbox. This allows us to encourage more async conversations and reduce the need for the number of push notifications. We also designed the mention system closely with the inbox so that even if you aren’t subscribed to channels, mentions will still appear in your inbox. This is great for joining partner teams where you don’t need to view every conversation but do need to respond when you are mentioned. We believe that most messaging apps are secretly to-do lists in disguise; you have to read, respond, or do some task when you receive a thread. We wanted to give you the ability to manage threads individually. We let you mark each thread as done, which hides them from your inbox and is useful to keep track of tasks. You also can set reminders and mute threads with one click/key. With these features, we make it easy to get to a zero inbox state. This combined with the inbox makes it easy for you to keep track of conversations and make sure you don’t miss anything. Linen is designed for power users. We love keyboard shortcuts and want an experience that is keyboard-first. For many, the messaging app is the app that is used the most. We believe that you should be able to use Linen for an entire day without touching the mouse. We’ve added modern features like CMD+K for navigation. We’ve designed Linen to be fast and lightweight. Our gzipped bundle size is 400KB, so it's fast on first load, and we’ve introduced multiple layers of caching to make sure things are fast on subsequent loads. You take a random ball out of the urn—it’s red—and discard it. The next ball you pick (out of the 99 remaining) is: More likely to be red 22.6% More likely to be green 37.1% Equally likely 20.9% Don’t know/see results 19.5% I thought it was interesting (but not surprising) that so many people got this wrong. Basically, Bayesian thinking is really foreign to people. It's essentially similar to the famous Monty Hall problem, where the first bit of information tells you something about the world. In any case, I thought it might be illuminating to give a complete demonstration, using both exact calculations AND simulation, of the "wrong" and "right" approach, which you can see at the Colab link above.

Hi HN, I’m here to show you a new codemod library. In case you’re not familiar with the term "codemod", here’s how it was originally defined AFAICT: > Codemod is a tool/library to assist you with large-scale codebase refactors Codemods are awesome, but I felt they were far from their potential, and so I’m very proud to show you all an early version of a codemod library we’ve built called Codemodder ( https://codemodder.io ) that we think moves the "field" forward. Codemodder supports both Python and Java ( https://ift.tt/kzlLyo3 and https://ift.tt/RFCbHm5 ). The license is AGPL, please don’t kill me. Primarily, what makes Codemodder different is our design philosophy. Instead of trying to write a new library for both finding code and changing code, which is what traditional codemod libraries do, we aim to provide an easy-to-use orchestration library that helps connect idiomatic tools for querying source code and idiomatic tools for mutating source code. So, if you love your current linter, Semgrep, Sonar, or PMD, CodeQL or whatever for querying source code – use them! If you love JavaParser or libCST for changing source code – use them! We’ll provide you with all the glue and make building, testing, packaging and orchestrating them easy. Here are the problems with existing codemod libraries as they exist today, and how Codemodder solves them. 1. They’re not expressive enough. They tend to offer barebones APIs for querying code. There’s simply no way for these libraries to compete with purpose-built static analysis tools for querying code, so we should use them instead. 2. They produce changes without any context. Understanding why a code change is made is important. If the change was obvious to the developer receiving the code change, they probably wouldn’t have made the mistake in the first place! Storytelling is everything, and so we guide you towards making changes that are more likely to be merged. 3. They don’t handle injecting dependencies well. I have to say we’re not great at this yet either, but we have some of the basics and will invest more. 4. Most apps involve multiple languages, but all of today’s codemod libraries are for one language, so they are hard to orchestrate for a single project. We’ve put a lot of work into making sure these libraries are aligned with open source API contracts and formats ( https://ift.tt/POfYGM4 ) so they can be orchestrated similarly by downstream automation. The idea is "don’t write another PR comment saying the same thing, write a codemod to just make the change automatically for you every time".
